Integrated methodologies combine humanistic and scientific approaches for the understanding, conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage. This multidisciplinary approach enables the analysis of complex data, ensuring more effective and targeted interventions. The interaction between historical analysis and conservation techniques creates a virtuous circle of best practice that improves cultural heritage management.
Knowledge transfer concerns the collaboration between universities, research organisations and companies to apply technological innovations in the field of cultural heritage conservation. This process facilitates the dissemination of new techniques and tools, improving the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage. It is a key element in transforming scientific research into effective operational practices.
Cultural participation promotes the active involvement of citizens in the enhancement of cultural heritage. This process increases social cohesion and sustainability by making culture accessible and meaningful for communities. Museums, archives and other cultural venues become spaces for sharing and learning, where cultural heritage is used to educate and unite people.
The ‘Anamnesis’ work package focuses on the detailed collection of heritage information, also using indirect surveys, to map the state of conservation and assess risks, according to the scale of investigation. Various factors are considered, such as seismic risk, assessing both structural aspects and the materials used, construction techniques and transformations due to restoration and war damage. One of the main objectives is to identify specific procedures for prioritising interventions. Leader UNICT; Participants: UNICT, ICR, UNIMI, UNIBO, UNITO, UNISOB.
The Work Package ‘Knowledge’ focuses on the creation and dissemination of knowledge related to the conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage. Through innovative methodologies, such as archaeometric, diagnostic and monitoring techniques, conservation strategies are defined at both site and artefact level using micro-invasive methodologies. Protocols are drawn up for the study, documentation and valorisation of various categories of artefacts, and advanced software is implemented for the textual reconstruction of missing epigraphic documents. Leader UNIMI; Participants: UNICT, ICR, UNIMI, UNINA, UNIBO, UNISOB.
The Work Package ‘Restoration’ is dedicated to the development and implementation of restoration techniques for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage. These include the design and use of innovative inorganic and consolidating materials. The strategies will be applied to diverse specific cases, including paintings in hypogeic contexts, murals in urban environments, Renaissance artefacts, archaeological contexts with lithic components close to the sea and complex sites affected by environmental disasters, urban expansion and wars. Leader ICR; Participants: UNICT, ICR, UNIBO, UNIRM1, UNIMI, UNINA, UNIBO, UNISOB, OPD.
The ‘Monitoring’ work package deals with environmental monitoring, detecting humidity and air quality to identify potentially hazardous substances and plan intervention strategies. Interventions are carried out to monitor lithobiotic communities and (micro) environmental conditions, identifying critical climatic thresholds and biodeteriogenic devitrification procedures. These activities will contribute to the updating and systematisation of the Risk Atlas. Leader UNINA; Participants: UNICT, ICR, UNIBO, UNIRM1, UNIMI, UNINA, UNITO, OPD.
The Work Package ‘Sharing’ focuses on two main aspects: the involvement and awareness-raising of citizenship and the sharing of knowledge with different actors and stakeholders. Through active interaction with the public in a bottom-up process, the aim is to involve citizenship both in project implementation and in sharing research results and activities. In addition, guidelines and protocols for good practice are drawn up at various levels, including planning with local authorities, preventive conservation strategies and documentation methods. To unify these actions, the creation of platforms for data collection and management, intelligent monitoring and public sharing is planned. The publication of cascading calls fosters interaction between universities, research institutions and SMEs, facilitating the realisation of the project products. Leader UNITO; Participants: UNICT, ICR, UNIRM1, UNIBO, UNIMI, UNITO UNISOB.
